Celebrating Puppyhood, Cherishing Every Moment

There are moments in life so full of love and laughter that they become lifelong memories. And in Amazing Dog Stories by David Wilk—a finalist for Book of the Year from the National Dog Writers Association—Chapters 12 and 13 remind us that when it comes to our dogs, those moments are worth everything.

What do you get when you invite 13 dogs to a backyard pool party? Chaos, comedy, and unforgettable joy.

In “The Party,” Wilk recalls the first birthday of Gracie’s magical litter—an occasion that called for more than just a quiet celebration. It turned into a full-on reunion. All 13 Golden Retrievers were invited back to the home where they were born, and remarkably, every single one showed up.

The dogs knew they were family. That much was clear. From the moment they reconnected, there was tail-wagging, leaping, wrestling, and swimming. Oh, so much swimming.

The Wilks’ backyard pool transformed into a canine water park. At first, some people considered joining in, but the dogs had other plans. After a few romps through the dirt, the pups would launch themselves into the water, then back out again—mud flying, laughter ringing through the air. Before long, the pool turned completely brown with a mix of fur and fun.

There was even a special birthday sign hung in the window, created by Terryle (“Tunes”) using 13 cutout dog bones spelling “Happy Birthday.” From the inside of the house, each bone represented a puppy looking back out at the world they came from.

What makes this chapter so touching isn’t just the party—it’s the people. The families who had adopted each puppy had stayed in touch. They sent photos, shared updates, and genuinely cared. It was a reminder that letting go of the puppies didn’t mean losing them. It meant creating a larger extended family, all connected by love and fur.

Now fast-forward to 2024. The story shifts in “Life Goes On,” where we find Wilk and Tunes living near the beach with their two beloved Golden Retrievers—Petey and Tinker—who are now eleven years old.

Their forested hillside home, once filled with puppies and wide-open adventures, has been traded for ocean breezes and sandy walks. The dogs may be slower, especially Tinker, who has some health issues, but the spirit remains. She still jumps up for morning walks and, true to her lifelong personality, rushes to greet every person she sees.

Everyone in the neighborhood knows Tinker. Her fur is mostly white now, but her charm hasn’t aged a day.

Meanwhile, David has embraced a second career writing personal biographies for clients, capturing other people’s stories just as he’s done so beautifully with his own. Life has changed, but it hasn’t lost its meaning. If anything, it’s become richer, deeper, and more grounded in gratitude.

Together, these two chapters reflect the very heart of Amazing Dog Stories—the celebration of joy, the ache of time passing, and the love that stays constant.

This book isn’t just about funny dog tales (though there are plenty). It’s about what it means to live fully, through tragedy, healing, and joy, and how dogs help guide us through every season.

Whether they’re puppies at a pool party or seniors with snow-white fur, our dogs are our greatest companions.

And no matter how much time passes… life with them always goes on.
